Hello, I'm Dr. Donald Ozello of Championship Chiropractic for LIVESTRONG.COM. I'm going to be speaking about the pectoralis minor muscle and shoulder soreness. The pectoralis minor muscle is one of the chest muscles. It's origin is on three different ribs right down here on the top part of the chest. It's attachment is in the very front part of the shoulder blade, what is called the coracoid process. The pectoralis minor muscle when it contracts pulls the shoulder forward and downwards basically doing this type of motion. When the pectoralis minor muscle is injured or if it is very tight it starts to pull that shoulder downwards into this position. When that occurs the shoulder is not sitting properly in the joint. The shoulder blade is pulled away from the spine and it could cause soreness throughout the different areas in the shoulder complex. Some very simple things that you can do to help to prevent soreness in the shoulder and help to keep your pectoralis minor muscle healthy is do some simple stretching exercises. When you stretch the pectoralis minor muscle you are also going to be stretching some of the other muscles too, basically the pectoralis major. Very simple stretches that you could do that will help to ease that tightness and help lessen the shoulder pain and soreness that accompanies it. A very simple way to stretch the pectoralis minor and the pectoralis major muscles is by laying down on a training table or you can even do it on your bed or on your couch. If you are going to be stretching the right side you want to move over to the side of the bed. You want to be in a safe position. Put your arm 90 degrees from your body. You can bend the elbow and just let that shoulder fall down. You are going to feel a stretch in that pectoralis minor and in the pectoralis major muscle. That will help to lessen some of the tightness and prevent the soreness in that area. Hold this simple stretch for 20 to 60 seconds and then switch and do the other side. You can do that three or four times in a row and it will help to stretch out the pectoralis minor muscle. Get that muscle nice and healthy and prevent any shoulder soreness from occurring.
