Hi, I'm Natalie Jill. Let's look a the difference between a meal replacement shake and a protein shake. It can be so overwhelming and so confusing, how do you know what to choose, a meal replacement or a plain protein shake? Let's talk about the differences. Protein, let's start with that, there's many different types of protein powders. Whey is a very fast absorbing quick protein that's ideal for immediate digestion so you want that right before a workout, post workout or earlier in the day like first thing in the morning. There is longer lasting proteins like casein, egg and plant-base that can be used at any time throughout the day and they are typically a little bit longer lasting. A meal replacement shake means a protein that's combined with some healthy fats and some carbohydrates to replace a meal. So it actually replaces a whole meal. Now when looking at protein shakes or meal replacement shakes, plain protein will typically have a lot less calories, maybe 100 to 150 calories where a meal replacement shake will be closer to 250 to 400 calories because you are replacing a full meal. So there you have it, there is a difference between plain protein powders and protein shakes for meal replacements.
