Hi, I'm Juliet Kaska and this is does yoga give you muscle. There's a big misconception out there that yoga is only about flexibility. But in truth it's actually the balance of flexibility and strength. Yoga works very similar to weight training. The difference is that you are using your own body weight as this form of resistance. It actually tones you and defines you just like weight training. So I'm going to show you two exercises today to prove that yoga does build muscle. The first one we just call Chaturanga and you can also think of it as a yoga push-up. Place your hands as wide as the mat and this is one you can definitely practice at home, stretch your legs out behind you as if you were going to go into a push-up, otherwise known as a plank position and then you're going to draw the tailbone down and the belly button up, press down into the mat with your fingers and pull your body weight right over your fingertips. Draw the shoulder blades onto your back and bend the elbows coming down keeping the heads and the shoulder drawing back. Come all the way towards the ground, hover and then exhale, push right back up to plank. After seeing this move, you tell me that yoga doesn't build muscle. It's also a great hip opener. So I'm going to bring my right arm underneath of my right leg, place my hands firmly onto the mat, shift my body weight forward and then bring my legs up in the air, yes.
