Hi, I'm Teresa, and welcome to My Fresh Kitchen. Today, I wanted to talk to you about the proper serving size of garbanzo beans. Garbanzo beans are definitely a part of a healthy diet. They are high in folate and important minerals like iron, a really good source of fiber and lignans and other phytochemicals, and they're also an excellent source of plant-based protein. But they're also energy dense, like most legumes, so you do want to make sure you watch your portions. When you buy them dry, the portion size is quite different because it will say it's about a quarter cup, and this has just over 100 calories. But when you go through and prepare your own garbanzo beans at home, it goes through a pretty rigorous process to get them to where you can actually eat them. What you'll do is you'll soak them overnight, and then you'll boil them for one to two hours, or you can buy them canned, but when they're prepared and ready to eat, they just about double in size. So the proper portion size of edible garbanzo beans is about a half cup, and that's what you have right here. It has about 120 calories, 6 grams of fiber and 7 grams of protein.
