Hi, I'm Michael Carson, here to show you how to use dumbbells to substitute for a leg press. Often you don't have a leg press machine but the strength of the legs are so crucial to the overall body strength, using dumbbells and various weights can make the same exact effect happen. Now let me show you how to do it. You want to make sure that when you are holding the dumbbells, you have them either at the sides of your body or directly in front of your body. When they are in front of your body it's more going to be like a deadlift. So you are still going to be working just like a leg press but you'll be working some of the back as well. You're going to bring your body down towards the ground, making sure that your hips are going back. As you go back you take in a deep breath in and as you exhale, you are pressing through the heels and lifting all the way up. You want to make sure that you really activate through the feet as well, pushing downward through the ground, not lifting with your toes and not gripping with your toes. That's going to cause friction in your knees and limits your ability for strength. So you want to make sure we don't grip or tighten the toes at all. So that's what you want to do is use some dumbbells, gently hold them in your hands. You can hold them at the front or at side and either way, as you are squatting you are substituting for a leg press.
