Hi. I'm Jennifer Kamstock, and this is how to tell if your bacon is good. Bacon can spoil pretty quickly and that's dangerous because bacteria can form causing illness such as e-coli or salmonella. So, here are some tricks and tips to make sure you're safe. First and the most easy, pay attention to the expiration date. Most bacons will have it clearly listed either a sell by, use by or freeze by date. Now, if your bacon is open, you probably want to consume it within seven days of that opening. If, however, you haven't opened it and it's approaching the use by date, you might have a little flexibility but here's some tricks to make sure it's still good. First, you simply want to smell the bacon. If it smells like bacon, you're good to go. If it smells a little acidic or anything off, when in doubt, throw it out. Next, definitely just look at the bacon under a good light, you want to see a pinkish hue against the white. If it has any gray tones or any dots of a discoloration, definitely, wrap it up really well so that no animals can get to it and throw it out. A third way to tell is by just touching the bacon. Bacon should not have any slimy texture so, if it has a strange consistency definitely throw it out. And, a few tips for you as far as bacon goes, as a health practitioner, I encourage you to try and get an uncured bacon which is, basically, just going to be bacon and some natural spices and flavoring versus cured bacon which relies more on chemicals and additives. You want to be able to pronounce everything that's in your bacon. And, also, if you haven't tried turkey bacon, definitely, give it a try it will save you a lot of fat and calories.
