Hi, this is Jamie Glick. I'm here to talk about how to start a running program when you're out of shape and overweight. Starting a running program is a great way to kick start yourself to a healthy lifestyle. But there are certain things to keep in mind when you're starting yourself on this journey. When you're starting a running program, first thing you should do after you speak to your doctor is go to a running store. A running store, there's usually one in your neighborhood, or hopefully one close by, that they will be able to fit you with your running shoe for your foot type. Everyone has a different foot type, different body structure, and a different running sneaker that will accommodate them best. Once you have your sneaker, you need to get some running gear, whether it's hot weather gear, cold weather gear, whatever gear is right for your particular environment and when you're starting, and then you'll be ready to hit the road. When you're starting running, you never want to start by going out there and running. If you're a first time runner and you haven't done much of anything in awhile, you might want to start with what they call a run-walk program. With a run-walk program you're gonna walk for a specified number of minutes. When you start a good ratio is a four minute walk to a one minute run. So you would walk for four minutes, try to walk at a decent pace, and then you're gonna jog for one minute. Any pace you can maintain is great. And you would repeat that. And you can do that for the first week, maybe three times a week.
