Hi, this is Michelle McLafferty, and this is how to tread water for five minutes. Five minutes is going to seem like a really long time in the water, especially at first. So I recommend you keep a few things in mind, really use a nice efficient technique, as well as starting slow and building your way up. So technique-wise a lot of the strength is going to come from your arms and from your hands, sculling through the water. So you want to keep a nice firm wrist, cupping your fingers closed sculling the water in little figure 8s as you push down in the water, that's going to help keep your body afloat. While you do that, moving your legs, you can do a simple frog kick or the most efficient is going to be an egg beater kick, one foot and then the other moving in a rotational direction, staying near the wall for support, treading, sculling with your hands, kicking with your legs and go ahead and just work your way up from one minute, two minutes and eventually before you know it you're going to be sculling and treading water for five minutes.
