Hi, I'm Jesse Harding, and today we're going to be talking about how to use a walking stick for self-defense. A walking stick can be a very practical tool to help us in our self-defense and has many Marital Arts applications. In the Martial Arts we have a saying that, "I am the weapon and everything else is an accessory." So, whatever you're holding in your hand becomes an extension of your intention. And in the case of a walking stick, if you happen to have one or any kind of improvised weapon, it can allow you to achieve a safe distance from the attacker. So, you can use it to reach the attacker and keep yourself safe. When we look at the walking stick or types of sticks, we have some that have the cane in the hook style and some that are just straight. Both can be used in very similar ways. You also have different types of grips on the stick, both hands up, both hands down; one hand up, one hand down and we can reverse that. In some cases, we might hold the cane or the stick like a baseball bat. So, we can swing it in this fashion. In other cases, we might hold it more from the top and use it in this manner or at circular parring styles. We have a variety of ways we can use it. Both hands can be used very effectively for self-defense and personal protection.
