Hello everyone, I'm Stella Metsovas and today, I'll be addressing a pretty important topic, "The best foods and supplements to take for your spine and disks." First off, let's get into the anatomy of your spine. Did you know that over 24 vertebrae make up your spine? Within the spine, you'll find nerves, muscles, ligaments and tendons. Now, because I study foods and it's effect on our bodies, I want to take a very conservative approach when I'm looking at spinal and disk problems, assuming you haven't suffered from an injury. A typical Westernized diet will compromise the health of your spine and disks because the foods that are typically processed put your body into a pro-inflammatory state. And this is what you really want to avoid for optimal spinal health. My top food recommendations include those that are rich in anti-inflammatory properties, filled with organic proteins like wild fish, organic chicken and beef, olive oil, dark green leafy greens, grass-fed butter, coconut oil, nuts and seeds, seasonal fruits and tea. Topical magnesium is one of my favorite recommendations for a healthy spine and disks because it's absorbed directly transdermally. Supplemental enzymes like bromelain found in papaya are also great for joint and spinal pain because the action of enzymes act by reducing inflammation in the body. Vitamin D is also critical but you need to consume or get your Vitamin D from sunlight for optimal benefits. The best sources of Vitamin D are found in egg yolks and fish, but more importantly sunlight on your skin. Zinc is another critical nutrient for spinal and disk health. Look for zinc in organic mushrooms and pumpkin seeds.
