ALICE MERRITT: Now I am going to talk to you about organic milk. A lot of people are moving towards buying more organic foods and that is because when you look for organic dairy products, it means the animal has not been exposed to any antibiotics, it still got no added growth hormone and it is typically been fed organic feed. It also tends to be more free ranging in a less confine space. It is still important to consider when buying organic milk that you still choose lower fat varieties. Fat free milk or 1% milk is going to be a better choice. 2% in whole milk, you get high saturated fat content and there is really no nutrition or nutrient difference between the varieties of milk. Important things to remember about organic milk is if you are in a high growth stage such as infancy, childhood or if you are pregnant, it might be good to consider buying organic milk. This is because in this stage in our life we are much more sensitive to some of the antibiotics and growth hormones and negative things associated with conventional milk. Other things to consider is remember to still buy the low fat milk choices. Fat free milk is good or 1% milk. Also going to your local farmers market is a good place to buy dairy. And again, when you are looking at the organic section, you want to make sure your milk has the USDA organic symbol or says a hundred percent organic to ensure that it is truly an organic source. All of these things are healthy choices for choosing organic milk.
