ALICE MERRITT: Now I'm going to talk to you about white wine. A 5-ounce glass of white wine is about a hundred calories. The thing about these calories is they're empty calories; there's not a whole lot of nutrition value when you're drinking white wine. A lot of people have heard that a glass of wine a day helps lower risk for heart disease and has a lot of health benefits, that's actually being referred to red wine. Red wine has some antioxidants in it that help reduce your risk of heart disease but it's not recommended that you drink red wine for the benefits if you aren't already drinking. Other important things to remember about wine is alcohol should be consumed in moderation; it's recommended that women have about one drink a day and men only two drinks per day. Remember that wine is excess calories and it can contribute to weight gain and obesity, and remember you're getting very little nutrition value for the amount of wine you drink. You never want to drink wine or alcohol on an empty stomach because alcohol can actually lower your blood sugar levels and be dangerous to drink on an empty stomach. So it's important to remember these things when you're drinking white wine.
