ANGIE SCHNEIDER: I am here with Jim Doherty of the Youth Hockey Foundation of Austin and we are going to demonstrate the beginning concepts of skating. The first thing that we are going to look at today are your edges of your skate. To be able to skate, you need to understand you have inside and outside edges. To find your edges you are going to sit with your knees at a 90-degree angle and lean your knees in at a 45-degree angle towards the ice. Those are your inside edges of your skate. To find your outside edges, you are going to lean your knees out at a 45-degree angle so the blades are touching on the outside and those are your outside edges. Understanding your edges will help you be able to thrush and push against the ice and have proper skating forward motion.
