DR. CAMERON CRAVEN: Hi. I'm Dr. Cameron Craven from Westlake Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery, and I'm going to talk to you a little bit about breast lifting. A breast lift or a mastopexy can be performed in a number of different manners. Most breast lifts or mastopexies involve an incision around the nipple areolar complex. This alone would be considered a Benelli lift and can be done to reduce nipple areolar size as well as to provide a small lift. As the degree of patient's breast drooping increases, the scars necessary and incisions necessary to remove the appropriate amount of skin to provide an adequate and appropriate contour for the breast will change with the patient. Another type of mastopexy or breast lift that can be performed is similar to a Benelli but involves a vertical incision below the nipple areolar complex that descends towards the inframammary fold or the crease below the breast. In the most severe cases of breast drooping or ptosis, an incision across the inframammary fold from side to side as well as the vertical incision and the periareolar incision are all necessary. Your surgeon will discuss with you what type of breast lift is most appropriate for you. Additional considerations would be whether or not you would benefit from having a breast implant placed as well in order to provide fullness in the upper pole of the breast. One other consideration is whether or not your surgeon will use drains. All these should be discussed in detail with your surgeon prior to planning breast lift surgery.
