CHARLES BARKSDALE: My name is Charles Barksdale. I am here with the Texas Rowing Center. We are going to talk about some of the ideal or best weather conditions to have while rowing. We live here in Austin, Texas which is a wonderful place to row. We have great weather year-round. Some of the Northern universities, they get frozen over, actually travel down here during the winter. The best conditions to rowing are very light winds or no winds hopefully and calm waters. Temperature is not that relevant. We go down to about 20 degrees and we row with t-shirts because it is such as strenuous sport. The wind is one of the major factors that makes you not want to row. High winds make it very, very difficult to row. It upsets the balance of the boat and these boats are very unstable to begin with so you do not want to go into that. The other thing is lightning. Of course, we do not row when there is lightning because the boat, yourself, and the oars are all conductive. But in Austin, we have very few days where we do not get a chance to get out on the lake. The weather here is great year-round. We average, I think, 350 days of rowing a year so it is a prefect place to row and wonderful condition. Even today with a slight wind is a wonderful day to row.
