CLIFFORD SEWELL: Hello. It's Dr. Clifford Sewell. A message about ulcers. In my patients, the number one risk factor for ulcers or the number one behavior that leads to ulcer is nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory use. Patients that use an overabundance of aspirin, ibuprofen, Naprosyn are at the high risk of developing ulcers over a long-term use. This can be quite a serious condition if the ulcer were to bleed. The patient would require blood transfusions and/or surgery. The symptoms of an ulcer would include burning to the upper part of your abdomen, pain, sometimes you'll note blood or melena in the stools. Melena is a dark tarry stool. If you noticed any of these conditions, you should seek medical care right away.
