CLIFFORD SEWELL, MD: Hello. It's Dr. Clifford Sewell. I have a message about the menstrual cycle. The menstrual cycle is a natural process in females where the woman develops a lining to the uterus which is shed once a month. The onset of menses occurs approximately around the age 11 to 13 for women. There can be quite a variation in the onset of the age of the period which can lead to social stressors, teasing at school. Parents should educate their daughters about the menstrual cycle so there are no surprises and things are anticipated. Most menstrual cycles last approximately 28 days; however, there could be a wide variation. If there is pain or increased emotional or anxiety disorder associated with your period, you should seek medical attention. A menstrual cycle is 28 days. The actual duration of the menses is approximately seven to eight days on the long side. Some women only have periods of three or four days. There can be heavy flow or light flow. Menstrual cycle onset is at the age of approximately 10 to 13. Most women have menstrual cycles up to age 48, 50. Again, there's a variability of fluctuation on the menopause date.
