CLIFFORD SEWELL, M.D.: Hello. I'm Dr. Clifford Sewell. A message about prostatitis. The prostate gland is involved with seminal fluid formation in men for ejaculation. It's located in the urinary tract between the kidney and the penis. An infection of the prostate gland is most often caused by a bacteria, most commonly E. coli. This bacteria enters the body from the penis and travels up to the prostate gland forming an infection. Symptoms of prostatitis would include fever, occasionally burning with urination, or more frequent urination. The treatment for prostatitis is antibiotics. The diagnosis is most readily done by a urinalysis and/or a prostate examination. These examinations and analyses should be done by a doctor, and he can provide you antibiotics for complete resolution of your problem.
