PATTY BURROWS: How to teach the alphabet. Learning the alphabet is one of the foundational skills of learning to read. So it's very important for your child to learn the letters of the alphabet. You may do many, many activities and I'm just going to touch on a few of them. Make sure that what you do is fun, make sure that you point out the alphabet in every aspect of the child's environment. Some of the activities that you can do are you can have letters of the alphabet and have things that represent the letters. For instance, this J has jewels on it. J is the first letter in the word jewels. Another thing is using stickers. Children have stickers everywhere. This C has stickers on it to represent castle, cereal, clown. Another thing is you may have your child to paint the letters. You can see that this is a very young child but that child is learning the letters. So it doesn't make any difference how young the child is you can continue teaching letters. Also, you may use clay, you may use the wonderful refrigerator magnets, I don't know how we ever got along without those refrigerator magnets. Make sure you point out alphabet in the child's life everywhere. When you're shopping, make sure you're looking at the doors when you enter and leave a restaurant or a store, look for the exit sign, call out the letters that are on the exit sign so that your child is more familiar with those letters. Remember when you're teaching the alphabet make sure that you point out everything in the child's environment so that they can start associating those letters with things that they're already familiar with.
