SKYLAR ULRICH, MD: Hi. I'm Dr. Skylar Ulrich. I'm going to talk about migraine headache. Migraine headache is an episodic headache typically thought to be vascular in origin but also has a multifactorial etiology. Symptoms of migraine headache are unilateral, pulsating headache that is worse with exertion. It is typically associated with nausea and vomiting, photophobia, and aura. The diagnosis of migraine headache is based on symptoms and clinical history. The treatment of migraine headache involves primarily pain relief. When pain relief is not effective, your doctor may prescribe a medicine called a triptan, which is specifically indicated for migraine headache. Prevention of migraine headache involves avoiding migraine triggers, which may be food, alcohol, stress, or overexertion.
