SKYLAR ULRICH, MD: I'm Dr. Skylar Ulrich. I'm talking about sinus headache. Sinus headache is the inflammation of the sinus cavities which causes headache. Symptoms generally are deep and constant pain in the cheekbones, bridge of the nose, or forehead. Typically, there is fullness which is felt over the sinuses. There may or may not be nasal discharge as well as facial swelling. Treatment of sinus headache involves decongestants, the use of pain relievers such as Tylenol and Motrin, antibiotics if infection is suspected, and the use of antihistamines if an allergic component may be present. Prevention of sinus headache involves the avoidance of triggers such as allergens like mold, dust, or pollen, as well as the use of decongestants when sinus fullness is noted, as well as treatment of any sinus infection which may be present.
