DR. GREGORY NIKOLAIDIS: Hi, I'm Doctor Gregory Nikolaidis with Westlake Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery here to discuss hair loss. Most important thing to remember with regards to hair loss is there's a number of things that can cause hair loss. So if the patient is noticing hair loss, they should seek out the advice of their physician. Typically we divide hair loss into scarring and non-scarring types of hair loss or alopecia. A number of things can cause both scarring and non-scarring hair loss including medicines, inflammatory diseases of the skin like lupus or even male or female pattern hair loss. Depending on what the cause of the hair loss then the physician can treat the hair loss appropriately. So if the patient has pattern hair loss, typically we put the patient on medicines like Rogaine or Propecia. If they have alopecia areata then we treat the inflammatory condition of the skin. The most important thing to remember once again about hair loss is to seek out the advice of your physician.
