DR. GREGORY NIKOLAIDIS: Hi, this is Doctor Gregory Nikolaidis with Westlake Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery here to discuss skin resurfacing. Skin resurfacing is a way about which we can remove the top layers of the skin to help generate new skin and new collagen to make the patients appear younger. The gold standard for skin resurfacing is a CO2 laser which was originally developed over 30 years ago to treat warts and skin cancers. It since undergone a number of upgrades including ultrapulse mode in the 1980's and more recently, a fractionated mode developed in 2008 to help minimize downtime and improved results. In our practice, we use the Fraxel Re:pair laser which is a CO2 laser that allows for reduction of fine lines, deep lines, skin tightening and reduction in brown spots. Other forms of resurfacing that are popular include Erbium and plasma resurfacing.
