DR. GREGORY NIKOLAIDIS: Hi, I'm Doctor Gregory Nikolaidis with Westlake Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery here to discuss Mohs micrographic surgery. Mohs micrographic surgery was originally developed by Doctor Fred Mohs. It is a way in which we can reduce--the removal of normal skin when removing skin cancers. With Mohs micrographic surgery, we numb the area and remove the tissue in layers. As the tissue is removed, we examine it in the office with a microscope to analyze whether or not the entire skin cancer has been removed. If there happens to be an area that has a little bit more skin cancer, we removed more skin in that region. By using this technique, we're able to spare the removal of normal tissue and ensure higher cure rates. Of all the treatments used for removal of skin cancers, Mohs micrographic surgery has the highest cure rate.
