DR. GREGORY NIKOLAIDIS: Hi, I'm Doctor Gregory Nikolaidis with Westlake Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery here to discuss fat grafting. Fat grating is an extension of liposuction whereby after numbing the patient out for liposuction, rather than removing the fat through a cannula into a suction device, we remove the fat into a syringe. After we remove the fat in the syringe, we typically clean it with saline and remove the blood and oil so that all we have is pure fat. Once we have the fat, then we can determine which areas the patient needs harvesting or injection of the fat. Typically in our practice, the most popular areas are the cheeks or buttocks so that we can achieve a lift in either one of those two areas. This technique was initially popularized by Doctor Sydney Coleman from New York who like to use it in place of face lifting. Places that we don't recommend fat grafting are areas of movement like the lips or around the eyes.
