JEFF COHEN: Hi, I'm Jeff Cohen. In today's segment, I'm going to share some tips with you on how to hit a volley. The volley is a shot that you're going to take out of the air preferably as close to the net as possible. A couple of tips to help you pull this shot off. Number one, make sure that the racket head is above your hands. Number two, try to make sure that the contact point is out in front. The closer you are to the net, the more angle you have available to you. A common mistake I see in a lot of club players, they have a tendency to bend at the waist. And really what you want to do is you always want to try to make the adjustments by bending and moving. So if the ball is low, you want to bend down to the ball. If the ball is away from you, try not to adjust with the racket, try to adjust with your feet. And one of the tips that I have to make sure that happens is keep the heads together. So you've got your racket head, you've got your head. So for the most part, you're almost going to keep the heads together when you hit that volley. You don't want to have any type of separation or whatsoever. Let's talk about the back swing on the volley. The back swing is dependent upon the height of the incoming ball and the pace of the incoming ball. If it's a ball coming in with a lot of pace, what you're really going to is just block the ball in the open court or point your strings where you want the ball to go. If it's a floater, you can take a little bit more of a back swing. But for the most part, you want to keep the racket head up, make sure you get a good shoulder turn for added power and keep the racket head out in front. When it comes to making adjustments for the volley, remember, make sure that you make the adjustments by bending and moving. Try to avoid making the adjustments by dropping the racket head or reaching for the ball. So remember these two tips on adjusting to the ball. Keep the heads together or sit and hit. You don't want to bend at the waist. Also, remember to track the ball to the racket. Make sure that you follow the ball. Don't look at your intended target. Always keep your eye on the ball. And last but not least, go to the ball. Make sure you go to the ball. Don't let the ball come to you and a couple of good things will happen. It will take time away from your opponent which is the most important thing. And by moving forward after your opponent hits the ball, the ball should be a lot higher over the net. You'll be a lot closer to the net. They will have less time and you'll have more angle to put that ball away.
