JONATHON UY, M.D.: Hello, my name is Dr. Jonathon Uy and I'm going to talk about foot ulcers. Foot ulcer is a broad term, which involves any type of open wound in the foot. Signs and symptoms basically include any opening or breaking of the skin, bleeding, and sometimes there maybe some redness or swelling around that area. Depending on the health condition of the person such as having diabetes, poor circulation or other systemic disease or deficiency in immunity, it is very important for ulcers to be treated because they may lead to infection or other complicated systemic diseases. The treatment of foot ulcers basically consists of topical medications such as antibiotic ointment and covering it up with a Band-Aid or other type of dressing to protect the wound from infection or further breakdown. Systemic diseases such as diabetes and poor circulation may cause the wound to heal slowly. If a person has these systemic problems they must acquire immediate attention from a podiatrist or physician. Prevention of foot ulcers include proper shoe gear and consistent monitoring of the foot. If you have systemic diseases such as diabetes or poor circulation, daily examination of the feet are necessary because once these foot ulcers occur, they may be difficult to heal and it may lead to infection of the skin.
