JOSH HARING: Hi, this is Josh and today I am going to talk about how to climb a mountain. I think today I will focus a little bit less on the technical aspects of climbing mountains and more on how to be prepared. Do your research, whether it is your favorite local mountain or some of the biggest mountains in the world. If you are prepared, you will definitely have an enjoyable if not successful endeavor. It is important when you are climbing a mountain that you do your research. There's mountain guides all over the world that you can contact to help you in your ascent. Now, when we are climbing mountains, we are obviously dealing with altitude, so it is important that you are fit. You are not going to get in shape on the mountain so you need to get in shape before you climb the mountain. Visit your local specialty retailer and they will have you hooked up with all the gear you will need from your base layer to your heaviest shell. It is important you have the proper clothing. Layering is important. Training around local peaks in your area can be of great advantage. What I like to do is stuff a backpack full of a bunch of weight and just find the biggest hill I can climb. Like any outdoor activity, you should never be doing it alone. Climbing a mountain is no exception. It is important to have friends and contacts and local resources in places that you will be climbing. Know what type of environment you will be entering. It is important before you start climbing, you have everything you need. Boots is a great place to start. If you are climbing a mountain that is not in the snow, you will be fine with a good pair of leather boots. If you are getting up in the mix snow and ice, you definitely need to look into boots and/or crampons.
