DR. LISA RHODES: Hi, I'm Dr. Lisa Rhodes with Westlake Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery. Sunblocks are an important step in helping prevent skin cancer. The best sunblocks are those that are broad-spectrum coverage, which means they block both UVA and UVB rays. They should be clearly marked on the sunblock when you buy it. The best time to first apply the sunblock is about 30 minutes to an hour before you go out, and then remember to reapply approximately every two hours while you're outside. This is very important if you're being really active and getting very sweaty, or if you're swimming and washing off some of the sunblock. The best sun protection though is in sun protective clothing. So you can look for sun protective swim shirts and wide brim hats that really can provide some good sun protection.
