Dr. Loretta Ciraldo, the author of the book Six Weeks to Sensational Skin, is a board certified dermatologist who has made numerous appearances on television shows such as Good Morning America. She holds a degree from Hunter College in New York, an M.D. from Downstate University at SUNY, and did her residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. I'm Dr. Loretta Ciraldo, voluntary professor of Dermatology at University of Miami School of Medicine, a practicing dermatologist for nearly 30 years, and a mother of four wonderful children, and I'm going to give you a few words of wisdom about chickenpox which we also call varicella. Now, the good news for mothers and young children is that there is now a chickenpox or varicella vaccine. So, if you haven't already been awarded this, please do ask your pediatrician or the school nurse about it, but many of us may not be in the area and the age group that gets the chickenpox vaccine and so I want to tell you a little bit about what to expect if suddenly you're starting to get new little blisters because this might be chickenpox. If you're getting this sudden onset of new blisters that are very, very itchy, then maybe you could have chickenpox. And what you should do is just brief yourself and take a look or ask someone, a friend, to look in your scalp. If you happen to have a blister in your scalp or in your mouth, then this diagnosis of chickenpox is all the more likely. And if you have chickenpox especially as a young adult, you need to see a physician and most of the time that physician will actually order a chest x-ray because chicken pox in adults is sometimes associated with varicella pneumonia which can be like a walking pneumonia, and you want to be so sure that you're diagnosed and the wonderful news is that there is a great pill that you can take even if you should get chickenpox.
