Dr. Loretta Ciraldo, the author of the book Six Weeks to Sensational Skin, is a board certified dermatologist who has made numerous appearances on television shows such as Good Morning America. She holds a degree from Hunter College in New York, an M.D. from Downstate University at SUNY, and did her residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Ciraldo has been a board-certified dermatologist since 1982, and is currently a voluntary professor at the University of Miami, where she runs a clinic in cosmetic dermatology.

DR. LORETTA CIRALDO MD, FAAD: Hi. I'm Dr. Loretta Ciraldo, voluntary professor of Dermatology at University of Miami School of Medicine, and a practicing dermatologist for nearly 30 years. Now, sometimes people ask me about the term "dermabrasion", and what do we mean by a true dermabrasion? This is something that I will almost go back to my history on and tell you that when I finished my training about 1980 or so, I was teaching residents how to this procedure called "dermabrasion", and it involves a little motorized instrument that can either be a turning diamond head or wire head. And basically with this motorized head, physicians will first numb up the person's face and then they will go along and they will abrade or disrupt the surface of the skin all over the face. Although this is a procedure that potentially has a very good upside because it's meant to be a very programmed wounding of the skin and then hopefully, a programmed wound healing of the skin, anyone who is thinking that they may want to have dermabrasion must be especially vigilant and very, very careful about choosing the right physician. At this time, what's happening is very few physicians are well trained on dermabrasion. So please, if you're thinking of it, consult with the physician, ask for their before and after, ask for the worst case scenario, and think once, twice, and three times before you schedule yourself for this somewhat outdated but certainly very aggressive potential healing or clearing treatment for your face.
