About this Author

Dr. Loretta Ciraldo, the author of the book Six Weeks to Sensational Skin, is a board certified dermatologist who has made numerous appearances on television shows such as Good Morning America. She holds a degree from Hunter College in New York, an M.D. from Downstate University at SUNY, and did her residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Ciraldo has been a board-certified dermatologist since 1982, and is currently a voluntary professor at the University of Miami, where she runs a clinic in cosmetic dermatology.

DR. LORETTA CIRALDO: Hi, I'm Dr. Loretta Ciraldo, a board-certified dermatologist for nearly 30 years and author of "6 Weeks to Sensational Skin." Now, laser resurfacing is a great new buzz word in the whole field of cosmetic dermatology and cosmetic medicine. And it's really used for two main purposes. The first is for facial rejuvenation and the second is to remedy things like acne scarring. When we talk about laser resurfacing, there's a whole spectrum of machines, lasers that come under this umbrella of laser resurfacing. The first and kind of historically the most popular but now the oldest is what's called the ablative lasers. And what ablative lasers did is they actually removed the whole top layer of their skin so that people who had ablative lasers would find themselves in a situation where afterwards they would need a minimum of two weeks recovery, because they'd have to grow the top layer of their skin back. And basically as time has gone on, ablative lasers have fallen off in popularity. And now, we have non-ablative lasers, especially a laser called the Fraxel laser. And the Fraxel is a great way to treat yourself. I recently Fraxeled my neck and it basically is going to cause skin tightening with no downtime. We Fraxeled my neck and I saw patients the same day.
