DR. LORETTA CIRALDO: Hi, I'm Dr. Loretta Ciraldo, a Miami dermatologist and author of "6 Weeks to Sensational Skin." Now, the term lip augmentation is becoming very popular. And what do we mean by lip augmentation? It simply means a way to enhance the fullness of your lip. And there are really two basic ways to do it. One can be as simple as going to your local beauty supply store and buying a lip plumper. And most of the lip plumpers use something that will be potentially slightly irritating to your skin. It may be a cinnamon extract or even sometimes pepper extract. But if you want the best kind of lip plumpers, I advise you to look for one that has a peptide plumper in it, because that tends not to irritate your lips and it can give you with continued use an increased fullness in the appearance of your lip. So the best thing to do if you want to start at the beauty supply place or a place like Sephora is to ask for a lip plumper and read your ingredients and see if you can get a peptide kind of lip plumper. Once you've done that, if you say: Gee, I'm happy my lips look fuller, but I'd like to do something that's going to be a little more prominent and doesn't require daily application. Then you may consider having filler injections into your lips. And as even a professor of dermatology, I have to tell you that I advise you to have only temporary filler put in your lips. Most ideally, hyaluronic acid filler, especially Restylane or Perlane, which is going to plump up the appearance of your lips for somewhere from three to, hopefully, six months and you get to see how the lip looks. It usually looks more rejuvenated and more attractive if it's fuller, and best of luck to you and be sure to choose an experienced doctor for lip filler treatments.
