Dr. Loretta Ciraldo, the author of the book Six Weeks to Sensational Skin, is a board certified dermatologist who has made numerous appearances on television shows such as Good Morning America. She holds a degree from Hunter College in New York, an M.D. from Downstate University at SUNY, and did her residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Ciraldo has been a board-certified dermatologist since 1982, and is currently a voluntary professor at the University of Miami, where she runs a clinic in cosmetic dermatology.

The term microdermabrasion is something which really rapidly replaced the landscape of skin rejuvenating techniques about almost 15 years ago now. And it replaced the word dermabrasion, and dermabrasion was the very deep process which required a physician to come along and oftentimes take a wire brush and wear away layers of skin. But microdermabrasion is a much more skin-friendly gentle procedure where aluminum crystals are put on the skin surface at a very high speed and kind of brush along the skin surface to buff the surface of their skin. If you're someone who would like to minimize scaring, smoothen the skin surface, minimize visible signs of aging whether they're age spots or fine lines or skin roughness, then you might very well consider having microdermabrasion done. And the way to select a good person to do microdermabrasion is first to, I believe, ask your dermatologist if they know of someone. Many dermatologists or plastic surgeons have very good medical estheticians in their practices who have extensive training in microdermabrasion. The second thing in terms of microdermabrasion is to be sure that you prepare your skin well before microdermabrasion and after microdermabrasion treatment.
