MARY HONDROS: Okay, now I am going to talk to you a little bit about overactive thyroid. Overactive thyroid is when your thyroid produces too much of the hormones that it makes for your body. Some of the causes of overactive thyroid can include autoimmune disease, cancer or surgery of some type. So, what happens when you have too much of these hormones in your body is that your body has trouble regulating some of its functions. To support thyroid function, it is good to get calcium, magnesium, protein and carbohydrate in your diet. So, some good sources of protein include things like lean meats and fish and poultry. Good sources of calcium of course include milk, cheeses and tofu. And also, good sources of magnesium would be enriched cereals. So, to sum up, a good diet for overactive thyroid, just remember that you need to choose three servings of calcium-rich foods per day such as milk or cheese, choose two servings of a lean protein such as a turkey, which is lean, or even tofu could be a source of protein. Thirdly, remember to choose dry cereals in the morning to support your magnesium intake. And lastly, remember to avoid the [SOUNDS LIKE] herbafeder which is found in over-the-counter cold remedies, because it messes up your thyroid hormones. And that is all for overactive thyroid.
