Hi, this is Christi Ferretti here with Expert Village talking to you today about how to be a smart shopper. Three key points when shopping in the grocery store: pulling from the back or the bottom, checking your transportation, and shopping in order. When you are picking up things like milk or meats or even vegetables for that matter, pulling from the bottom or pulling from the back is going to ensure you are getting the newest products that the grocery has put out. They operate on a system called FIFO which is first in first out meaning the first item they get in is the first item they want you to pick up so they are going to put that in the front or on the top. Now I don't want you to go pick the bottom tomato and make a mess all over the store. But basically look around a little bit, dig a little deeper into the meat section and into the milk section and pick out the dates that are going to be the newest date that you can get home. Shopping in order, if you are picking up tomatoes they are fine to have in your cart all day. But if you are picking up something like a cucumber that you want to stay cold and crisp you want to get that toward the end of your shopping much like your ice cream or chicken you want to keep these items together. Of course not getting your chicken near your cucumber, but we want to keep the cold items together to keep them cool and make sure they stay cool throughout the rest of your shopping experience. Along with that, I think that it is important if you are driving more than thirty or forty minutes to get home, especially in summer days in southern states where it is hot you want to make sure you have a cooler with some ice or some cold pack to keep those cold items cold, so when you get home you have a fresher product. So again three key tips: pull from the back, shop in order and make sure you have a transportation plan.
