MARY HONDROS: Okay now I am going to talk a little bit about gluten free fruits. If you have celiac disease and you are on a gluten free diet this means you need to avoid gluten in all its forms. The good news is that almost all fruit products fresh, frozen and canned are free of gluten; you do not need to worry in general about the fruit that you eat. One of the ways you can ensure that your fruit does not have any added gluten is to check your canned products, they might have some additives in them and remember that gluten additives go by all kinds of different names like vegetable gum, flavoring, emulsifier, hydrolyzed vegetable protein and things like that. So in general all fresh fruits are safe products to eat as well as all fresh vegetables. So some tips if you are following a gluten free diet and you are trying to eat those fruits just remember that number one any fresh, frozen, or canned fruit product is generally okay. Number two, plain fruit juice, a hundred percent fruit juices are also excellent choices and those are generally gluten free. Thirdly, the things you do need to watch out for are pie fillings, things that have been processed because they may contain gluten. And lastly, learn the alternate names for gluten in your foods, consider things like flavoring, emulsifier, hydrolyzed plant protein and starch or starch additive because those mean that that food might contain gluten. So those are four tips on following a gluten free diet and choosing gluten free fruits.
