MARY HONDROS: Okay so if you are following a gluten free diet, one of the things that you do not need to be as concerned about is your vegetables. Vegetables that are fresh, frozen or canned are all generally gluten free and a good way to tell is just to check your food labels for additives. The vegetables that you do need to be concerned about are vegetables that have sauces included with them, pickled or canned vegetables that are pickled and vegetables that are creamed or breaded those may have gluten additives. One of the ways you can check to be sure is to check your label for some additives not only gluten but also starch, hydrolyzed starch, vegetable gum, emulsifier and flavoring those are all alternative names for gluten. So if you are concerned about your gluten intake with your vegetables you should just check. So four tips if you are keeping a gluten free diet is that one choose any fresh, frozen or canned vegetable they are all gluten free and safe to consume. Tip number two, make sure you are careful with creamed or breaded vegetables especially ones that have breading on the outside that means that they most definitely have gluten in them. Three, be aware of vegetables that are pickled and also those that come with sauces those may contain gluten. And lastly, just make sure you are checking your labels for alternate gluten additives or gluten names like emulsifier, flavoring, starch, modified starch, modified food starch and things of that nature. So those are four tips if you are following a gluten free diet on keeping your vegetables gluten free.
