MARY HONDROS: Okay, I'm going to talk a little bit about the condition, fibromyalgia. This is a condition of general widespread pain in the muscles, joints, and soft tissues throughout the body. It can occur both above and below the waist, and on both sides of the body. Generally, doctors don't really know what fibromyalgia stems from and there's not really any kind of medication that you can take for it or anything that you can do to lessen the causes of fibromyalgia. Generally, there are some things that have worked for some people to lessen this inflammation in the tissues. And some of those things are eating like a vegetarian, raw diet, which just means that you stick to a basic diet of vegetables, fruit and produce. And for some people, this has improved their symptoms. Other people with fibromyalgia choose to look at alternative therapies like acupuncture and nutritional supplements. 2 supplements that you can look into taking are glucosamine and chondroitin. Those both have helped inflammation in the joints for some people. Also, taking a fish oil supplement daily helps because of the omega 3 fatty acids being anti-inflammatory, of course. This is another supplement that some people like to try. So 3 tips if you've got fibromyalgia and you want to look at some alternative therapies are, you could try fish oil supplements, taking one tablespoon daily is one dose. Secondly, you could try a glucosamine or chondroitin supplement. Thirdly, the vegetarian raw diet has helped symptom in some people. And lastly, remember that if you start any new herbal or remedy or anything like that, check with your doctor first and also follow the daily dosage because herbal remedies are not regulated by the FDA.
