MARY HONDROS: I am going to talk a little bit about rosacea. This is a skin condition that generally affects the chin, the cheeks and the nose on the face and causes them to appear kind of red, almost like you are blushing all the time. What causes this it is not--it is really kind of an unknown cause but eventually what can happen if it goes untreated is that the skin gets very rutty and the blood vessels start to show. There are certain foods that aggravate rosacea and those include things like excess alcohol, excessive spicy foods and excessive hot beverages and also foods that are high in histamine and MSG. So if you do have this condition, it is best if you do see your doctor and get treated so that you prevent, you know, further reddening of your skin. Also, four tips if you have rosacea and you want to try to keep it under control are to avoid excess alcohol. Try to limit it to one to two drinks per day and not everyday. Also avoid spicy foods because it might irritate your condition. Avoid drinking hot beverages too often. If you let them cool to lukewarm, that will be a lot better and it would not inflame the skin as much. And thirdly, avoid foods with histamine and those include foods like vinegar and sour cream which tend to irritate some people's condition but not everyone's condition so it is also important to know kind of what foods do irritate your skin more than others. So those are some tips if you have the condition rosacea.
