MARY HONDROS: I am going to talk a little bit about low protein foods. Naturally low protein foods include things like fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grain products. Obviously, foods that are higher in protein include foods like meat and milk and beans and those types of things. Low protein foods are a very healthy part of your diet and most Americans consume way too much protein. You typically need between 45 to 70 grams of protein per day. And in this country we generally get more than that from our diet. So we definitely need to be concentrating on increasing our low protein foods. Again, these are foods like fruits, vegetables and things like that. Limit your meat intake to three ounces per day if you are trying to keep your protein down and then limit your meat servings to two servings per day. Also, remember that you can get protein from non-animal products like beans and tofu and vegetable plants. In addition, be sure to eat things like whole grain products, whole grain rice, whole grain breads. And also, avoid protein shakes with too much protein because you want to try to eat more of your protein from your foods rather than from a protein shake. So those are some tips if you are trying to include low protein foods in your diet.
