MELISA BROWN: Hi, my name is Melisa Brown and I'm a licensed massage therapist here in Miami, Florida. I'm with U Need a Massage. In this clip, we're going to talk about how to prepare for a deep-tissue massage. Now, let's be clear on what a deep tissue is. It could be painful for some. Don't confuse the deep-tissue massage with just a good firm massage. As opposed to getting a deep tissue or as opposed to getting, like, a feather massage which is very light, you might want more pressure. A deep tissue really gets into the muscle tissue. It really digs in. It can be very painful. We're using tools; we're using our elbows. I can go on both sides of the spine up and down with my elbow. Now, again that can be very tender or it can be very gratifying for a lot of people. Some people just love the pain or the gain if want to call it from that. And it's going to be something that's going to be very relaxing for some, but for others it can be very stressful. So be clear on what it is that you want to feel. If you haven't felt anything deep before, try it on all yourself. All you have to do is take an elbow and press into your forearm. If you can take that throughout your whole body for an hour, that means you're a prime candidate for a deep-tissue massage; otherwise, just ask for a firm.
