Mike Jones has been surfing since he was only six years old. He was lucky enough to surf the pro tour for a few years before starting his own surf shop and clothing brand, As-hi-as-I-aM International. The brand now has shops in Tahiti, Hawaii, California, Florida, and Washington. Through his love of surfing, Mike has been able to travel all over the world.
MIKE JONES: Hi, I am Mike Jones from AZ-HI-AZ-I-AM and today we are going to talk about choosing the right surf wax for you. All right. Well, choosing wax is a very important thing because the temperature of the wax and the temperature of where you are at depends on how your feet are going to stick to your board. That is one of the most important things in surfing. So, first thing you got to realize is the temperature of the water and the climate you are going to be in. They make a tropical wax if you are going to be in warm water. Go to the surf shop and maybe get a recommendation of what wax for the area or what everybody is using. If you are in colder water, you are going to want a softer wax, something that is not going to be really hard when you jump in that cold water, so you are not slipping off your board, all over the place because that happens a lot. Now, I am going to show you how to put some of the wax, put the wax on your board. When you peel back the wax or the plastic cover off the wax, what a lot of surfers realize to keep their cars clean and stuff is to keep the plastic on. Just kind of peel the plastic back to where you need it so you only have what you are going to be applying showing right here. Okay, so applying the wax, you are going to want to get a firm grip on it, usually starting on the edge side. You do not want to lay it flat or it will end up--it is more resistance on the board. So use the smaller edge of the wax. And what I do is just I will rub in circles. Basically your feet are going to be all over the board. Your hands are going to be gripping the rails so you want to kind of wax to about here on the rails, about the edge of the rail right there where it starts to turn down. And as long as you are getting a good, even flow of wax, you are going to reduce your chance of slippage. Once we get it to this stage, a lot of surfers will just kind of rough up the wax with their fingers like this and get like a crisscross pattern. That is going to really lock your feet in place. It is perfect. She is ready to go.
