MIKE JONES: Hi I am Mike Jones from AZ-HI-AZ-I-AM. Today we are going to talk about how to stand up on a surfboard. Now that you know how to paddle, you are out on the ocean, you are ready to catch a wave, you tried it a few times, you are going to want to be standing up. So one thing that you have to learn is finding the sweet spots on the board. You basically want to imagine a line--imaginary line or some boards do have a stringer going down the board, front foot is going to want to be right about in the center of your board. Same thing with your back foot, you are going to want to find the sweet spot where you are going to want your back foot. Okay, it is going to be a one motion pop-up, okay. You do not want to try to struggle and get one leg up at a time. A lot of people will get into bad habits in the beginning of surfing. You want to make sure you are performing the correct pop-up. You are going to start with your hands on your rails like this, you are paddling. Once you get--feel like you are up to speed with the wave, you are going to just fully extend your arms and bring your legs up underneath you, popping your feet right to the center spots of the board, back foot, front foot okay. Also little micro adjustments on where you put your feet really make a big difference on how your board planes through the water and how it adjusts with your body weight. So what you want to do first of is just basically get to your feet, feel out where your stable at, keep your knees bent. Maybe you could even keep your hands on your board if you have to to try to stabilize yourself in the beginning.
