PHILIP TORIELLO: Hi. This is Philip Toriello, and this section is how to teach a child how to swim. As a swim instructor for 16 years, I've learned many things and the most important thing in working with children is to remember for yourself what it was like to be a child. I think that's the only way and the best way to understand a child's fears, very inexperienced, and also what it takes to learn as far as like what type of language to use, what types of exercises to use, what type of tools to use. In my swim lessons, I really try to take each personality and work with them as an individual not as a formulated type of swim lesson like we're blowing bubbles, we're doing kicks, we're doing back flips. If it takes using certain toys or certain reward systems, such as jellybeans or something to that effect, I happily include those in working with children in how to swim, starting from the basics of holding your breath, blowing your bubbles, slowly working in the backstrokes and safety floats, which is really quite important in the beginning processes so a child could be safe in and around the pool, not so a parent ignores the child when they're on the pool but just so a parent could feel more confident with their child being in and around water environments.
