RON COLBY: Hey, what we are going to show you now is how to use a bait caster. Bait casters are also called level winds because the way they line, they wind the line on the reel, nice and level and across the reel. These are very tricky. Most people have a lot of hard time with them but if you set them up right, you won't have a problem. And the first thing you need to do with your bait casters is set the brake. We are going to set the brakes in the spool tension knob. So, what you want to do after you tie your lure on, you want to disengage the reel, and watch how much line, see that is really falling way too fast for anybody just starting out. So, what you will want to do is hold your thumb on here, tighten your knob up, so that spool does not even move. And then just slowly loosen it, until it--what it did right there. And what it does is it will slowly go down and as soon as the bait hits the water, it stops all by itself. And then once you get that, then inside this spools on the reels are brakes and most of them have a magnetic brake or a centrifugal force brake and on the inside, as you cast, they expand and they come out. And they are like a brake on your car. And they start slowing down the spool. And if you have problems with overruns on these reels, if it overruns when you first cast on the initial cast, you need to adjust the tension. If it overruns after the bait has hit the water, you get a few loops in the reel. That one set perfect. You need to do adjust brakes on the side. Disengage the spool. Make sure your lure is only down about a third of the rod blank, right there. Hold onto the spool with your thumb, and you can just make this a little flip cast, you will be able to keep your day trouble free.
