RON COLBY: What we're going to show you today is how to cast a spinning rod. So you've got your lure already rigged, your line out, you're going to reel your line up so the bait is about a third of the way down the rod. You don't want to clear up the tip. You don't want a lot of slack all the way down to the bottom. This helps load the rod up and what it does is it loads the rod like this. And you want the rod to actually to do most of the casting and the work for you and you just want to use a little bit of wrist action to make the cast. So now with the spinning run, you just take this. Put your pole onto the line with your thumb, right here. Some people like to hold onto it with their forefinger especially when they're making really long cast and other people like to hold the line up on a handle with their thumb if you're just doing little soft cast and that so you can become more accurate. So then you just take the line, hold onto it, kind of press it up. You can press it up against there or just hold onto it with your finger, open the bell and just use, really, like I said, a little light wrist action. So what we're going to do is just make a nice soft cast, probably 20 or 30 feet out and you just want to take it and just flick it, just like that. Okay, after you make the cast, you want to take and close the bell with your hand. Don't do it with your reel handle because if you do, that's when people get into trouble like gets into a big knot and it loosens then when you cast, it all comes up off of there. So if you pull on, if you click the bell over with your hand, pull onto your lines, pulls on a drag a little bit and then start your reeling, you'll get rid of all the loops in the line and you won't have as much problems.
