RON COLBY: Okay, what I'm going to show you right here is a little trick when you start putting line on your reels. What you need to do is you need to pay attention to--especially, a spinning rod. Now if we look at this spinning reel, and most of them are this way, the reel, the bell on the reel turns clockwise as you're looking down on it. So as it winds the line onto it, it's rotating around like this, okay? So now when you put your line on and you put it onto the bell--onto the spool and you tie your knot on there and you start spooling it off--off the spool and putting it onto your reel, what you need to do is make sure the line comes off the spool in the opposite direction. So most manufacturers put the label on so it's very similar how it--to your spinning reel. So what you want to do is turn this spool upside down, usually with the--like I've said, the label will go down and so when the line comes off the spool onto your--it goes off counterclockwise. But then when it's going back onto the spool, it winds it just like this. It goes clockwise back onto your spinning reel spool and that will help keep a lot of line twist off of your spool and the line blow up so a lot of people have what's an open faced spinning reel. Now what you do for bait caster is when you tie it on--it's coming on, it's rotating back on there, levelly, all--just pretty simple. Bait casters aren't quite as simple but take and hold your line out when you string it--put it all through your guides and you put it on the spool so now it's coming off the spool straight back at you. Don't turn it over and let it come over because then it's putting a reverse curl back into the line and that will cause a lot of backlashes too. This spool straight off the spool onto your bait caster, for the level lines so most of times, the labels down but the biggest thing, sometimes the label's are back up as you got to pay attention to your reel and make sure your line is coming off the spool--the line spool the opposite direction is going onto your reel. So this one comes off counterclockwise, the spool on the spinning reel puts it on clockwise. And you'll save yourself a lot of hassle with line problems.
