RON COLBY: Okay, what we're going to show you now is how to choose a fishing rod. And really what you're doing when you're choosing a fishing rod is you really got to determine what type of bait you're going to be using first. Are you going to be using some really small, finesse type stuff, really light--light type baits? Are you going to be using some medium weight baits? What type of--and then you got to think about what type of fish you're going to catching. And then, if you're going to go to the giant stuff, you're going to be catching big fish, really heavy baits, it makes a big difference. You can't put a big heavy bait on a real light rod or a light bait on a real heavy rod because the action just--of the rod will just hinder your casting ability, your fishing ability, the sensitivity on the rod. Now like this bait, this big bait what you want is a very extra heavy rod. If you look on most rods, you'll have some specifications which will say like the line weight right here. Now this one ready for 12 to 25 pounds. Then you're going to get a lurer weight and this one is rated for three-eights to one ounce. Now there's some fudge factor in there but if you stay with the lurer weight, is the most important factor then your rod is going to perform properly. And then you'll get power ratings. And usually, the power ratings are marked like extra heavy fast which mean this is an extra heavy rod. It can cast extra heavy baits. It has a very fast tip. And then the manufacturer's model number sometimes they put those on there and they'll say like this--this is a power four on this rod and that's the stronger rod and that's used for a big heavy, heavy bait and you're catching big fish, maybe throwing in really heavy cover grass trees and you got to be using a big line like this braided line and that. Now on this other rod, now we're going to go to the unextreme. Light tackle. We've got a very fine fishing line on here and the same thing, it's handling a one quarter to a five-eight ounce lure and the line weight is 10 to 20. So when you choose a rod, it doesn't matter if it's bait caster or a spinning rod and what kind of fish--fishing you're going to be doing as far as like structure, you know, rocks, open water, grass, trees and then what kind of fish you're going to be catching. If you're catching crappie, you don't want a real heavy rod like we've got on this other lure, you want something like this. And if you're going to be catching big 10 pound bass in Mexico or someplace like that, you're going to be using this big lure and big line and you want to get the fish out of the cover, you need the heavy rod.
