SHAWN CONNOLLY: Trick skating. When it comes to trick skating, what you first want to do is build a good basis of skateboarding knowledge based on having good balance, knowing how to push and also knowing how to turn very well. The other thing that you're going to want to make sure that you're good at is make sure that you're good at falling and knowing how to fall. Knowing how to fall before you even begin skateboarding and trying on a difficult trick, you're going to be able to get yourself out of a lot of trouble that way. The other thing that you're going to need to learn how to do is learn how to take impact from jumping, knowing how to absorb landing with your knees, your ankles and your back, and rolling away from tricks safely. Eventually, when you start getting these basics together, you're going to add on to those and you will start to learn how to do ollies and start learning how to do, from that, 180 ollies and different combinations of that. From these tricks, you may start to learn how to flip your skateboard and then you'll learn shove-it variations. Once you learn a lot of the flip tricks and stuff like that, you'll want to start bringing them to ledges and being able to do the flips and grinds on ledges. Eventually, once you've mastered that, you will end up taking it to handrails and other obstacles. So basically, you want to start out with the easiest versions and work your way up. It may seem easy to look at a magazine or a video and see the hardest tricks that are out there and try to go and learn those tricks. But you want to do is build a strong basis for your skateboarding based on all the fundamentals of skateboarding, which are balance and being able to roll, turn and fall correctly. This will help you have longer longevity and help you to trick skate.
